Guidelines for Handling Vehicles Submerged in Flood Waters
The following are the recommended procedures for motor vehicles submerged in flood waters. It must be understood that time is an essential factor in preventing further damage to the insured vehicle that was submerged in flood waters. Below are vital pointers we gathered to prevent further damage to your unit, avoid claim problems and most important of all, to ensure your safety.
1. For safety reasons, it is not advisable to approach a vehicle that is completely submerged in flood water. It is best that the vehicle owner wait for the flood water to subside before approaching his vehicle.
2. Under no circumstance must the vehicle owner attempt to start or run the engine of a vehicle that had been submerged in flood water. There is a high possibility of water contamination of fluids/lubricants in the engine, transmission and axles. Attempting to start the engine may result to serious damage to the engine and other vital components of the unit. If this happens, subsequent or consequential damage caused to the engine and other vital components may be excluded from your claim.
3. Once the flood waters have subsided, it important that the flow of electric current to the electronic/electrical components of the vehicle is arrested immediately by removing the positive and negative battery clamps attached to the car batteries.
To prevent electric shock, it is recommended that the battery clamp attached to the negative terminal of the car battery should be removed first, followed by the battery clamp attached to the positive terminal.
4. Upon dismantling the battery terminals, the vehicle owner must report the claim immediately to his insurer so he may be guided with the necessary steps to take for the claim to be processed immediately and, if necessary, assisted in having the vehicle towed to the most conveniently located accredited shop. 5. To prevent further deterioration of the unit, it must be immediately cleaned, water damaged parts dismantled and dried, and most importantly, all fluids in the affected mechanical components must be drained and replaced to prevent damage and corrosion to metal and alloy parts / components of the vehicle.
Not all motor car policies have the Acts of God (AOG) coverage. This is optional for most comprehensive motor car insurance policies. The AOG cover can be procured for a minimal premium upon request. Please do not hesitate to call your agent, broker or our sales units for assistance. |
